Subject: Mother’s Day Sermon

Title: Holy Ghost Mama

Happy Mother’s Day! And Happy Pentecost! I wonder if there is any significance to the fact that Mother’s Day and Pentecost fall on the same day this year? You men may not know it but being a mom has never been easy. If you don’t think so just look back at your life and see all the things your mom had to put up with in you. What does it take to make a mom? You know you’re a mom when you’re up each night until 10 PM vacuuming, dusting, wiping, washing, drying, loading, unloading, shopping, cooking, driving, flushing, ironing, sweeping, picking up, changing sheets, changing diapers, bathing, helping with homework, paying bills, budgeting, clipping coupons, folding clothes, putting to bed, dragging out of bed, brushing, chasing, buckling, feeding (them, Not you), PLUS swinging, playing baseball, bike riding, pushing trucks, cuddling dolls, rollerblading, basketball, football, catch, bubbles, sprinklers, slides, nature walks, coloring, crafts, jumping rope, PLUS raking, trimming, planting, edging, mowing, gardening, painting, and walking the dog. You get up at 5:30 AM and you have no time to eat, sleep, drink or go to the bathroom, and yet ... you still managed to gain 10 pounds.

Now what about a Christian Mom. What is it that makes a great Christian Mom? I want to look at the scriptures with you today to see what it is that makes a Christian mom special.

Luke 1:39, At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”

46And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord (NKJV) My soul magnifies the Lord

Let’s look, Mom’s, and see if you can match up with the greatest example of motherhood who ever walked the face of the earth.

I. CHRISTIAN MOM’S ARE SENSITIVE TO THE WORD OF GOD. Luke 1:29, Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called£ the Son of God. 36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37For nothing is impossible with God.” This next verse is what makes Mary really special.

38“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her. Even when it didn’t make sense God’s word was sufficient for her. Mom’s can you be sensitive to the Word of God like that. Can you say that His word is a lamp unto your feet and a light to your path? Are you teaching your children and grandchildren the foundations in the Word?

II. CHRISTIAN MOM’S MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD. Luke 2:19, after the shepherds came in from the fields after Jesus was born to see what the angels had told them, 19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Now jump down to verse 25, Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
