THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD

By Sam Olumoko

Text: (Psalm 119:65, Psalm 119:169

You have dealt well with Your servant, O LORD, according to Your word . . . Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word. )

The Word of God is powerful and sharper than two-edged sword. It is powerful enough to help us in every situation we are faced with in life. In order to experience the dynamics of God’s Word, we have to keep on studying, and meditating in it day and night. We should be willing to make it our daily bread as well. Those who live according to God’s word will characteristically have this testimony. "You have dealt well with Your servant, O LORD, according to Your word." This is true, because the word of God is our comprehensive source of the Lord’s direction and of His provision.

Here are some circumstances when the Word of God is sufficient for our needs:

1. WHEN WE NEED SALVATION:

When God’s mercy unto salvation is needed for new life, one must turn to God’s word. "Let Your mercies come also to me, O LORD - Your salvation according to Your word" (Psalm 119:41).

Salvation is the beginning step we must take to have eternal relationship with God. We can not enter His kingdom without experiencing this marvelous grace. Jesus told Nicodemus: "Verily, verily I say unto you, unless a man is born again, he can not enter into the kingdom of God". (John 3:3). Some people equate being born again with going to church or belonging to a particular denomination. Others think baptism in water alone can save them. But Act 4:12 tells us: "And there is salvation in no other One; for there is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved". There is no difference between Jesus and His Word. He is the Living Word. It is when we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth, the Lord Jesus that we experience the grace of salvation.

2. WHEN NEED PERSONAL REVIVAL

When reviving is needed for those who have new life, one must again turn to God’s word. "I am afflicted very much; Revive me, O LORD, according to Your word . . . My soul clings to the dust; Revive me according to Your word" (Psalm 119:107, Psalm 119:25). Whatever the need, the Lord invites us to face it according to His word.

As Christians, we face tragedies doubts and challenge to our faith. Sometimes we may even find ourselves discouraged. But the Word of God is the ultimate solution to our daily fellowship with God and personal happiness. It is our daily bread! When we do not read God’s Word, we become spiritually hungry and months of that will eventually cause depression in our lives. Are you irritable and feel troubled within? God’s word is powerful enough to set you free.

3. WHEN WE ARE CONFUSED ABOUT LIFE ISSUES

When we do not understand the issues of life that press painfully in upon us, it is again time to run to the Lord and His word. "Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word." So often, perplexity is our human plight. The word of the Lord can sort it all out. As we get in the Word, the light is shed on the issue and eventually, the direction we need to take is revealed. God speaks through His Word. But we can not hear Him until we meditate in His Word.

4. WHEN WE ARE DISTRESSED

When the circumstances around us, or the turmoil within us, bring great distress, it is once again time to rely upon the Lord and His word. "Let, I pray, Your merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to Your word to Your servant" (Psalm 119:76). What a great comfort can fill our hearts, as we allow the Lord to speak words of peace and consolation from the scriptures into our lives. When we lose loved ones, we grieve and sense this awful pain within. But the medicine that will eventually pull us out of this situation is the Word of God. Many rely on the comfort of other Christian brothers and sisters alone. The comfort we receive from human beings is short lived. But the comfort from the scripture brings permanent resolve to our distress.

5. WHEN WE LACK STRENGTH

When our inner man is so burdened that we imagine our spiritual strength is gone forever, we have another great opportunity to seek the Lord in His word. "My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your word" (Psalm 119:28). God’s living and powerful word can bring strength anew to our weary soul. Isaiah 40:31 tells us that "those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Many Christians ignore their spiritual vitamin (the Word of God). Eventually, they feel malnourished and get spiritually sick. The solution is the Word of God.
