Summary: Are we ready for the role God’s Word should play in our lives?

The Role Of God’s Word In Our Lives

Isaiah 50:4-5

4 The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of disciples, that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens {me} morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

5 The Lord GOD has opened My ear; and I was not disobedient, nor did I turn back.

Isaiah presents a passionate view of God’s Word in our lives. God’s Word is to play a significant role in our lives. Unfortunately the Word of God is often relegated to a few moments of our day. Are we open to the role God’s Word should play in our lives?

I.The Knowledge of the Word

A. Knowledge of God’s Word is important

B. We often apologize for not knowing God’s Word or excuse ourselves as ones who do not know the Word.

C. This writer tells us that God had given him as the NIV says a "learned tongue." This is the idea of one who knows the Word of God. The NAS says that he gives the tongue of a "disciple." What a thought!

D. This is one who has the knowledge of the Word and one who speaks with knowledge of the Word.

E. This should be a goal for us- to be able to speak with the knowledge of the Word to others.

II. The Ministry of the Word

A. As we take God’s Word into our lives we can then be used by God to minister that Word to others.

B. The writer says "that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word."

C. We learn for at least two reasons:

1. We learn the Word for our own growth

2. We learn the Word to teach and help others 2 Timothy 2:2 "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."

D. In this case the writer learned the Word that it might be used to "sustain the weary one." We can all do this very thing. We may not all be called to preach but we can share a word of encouragement and support from God’s Word

E. When we learn the Word, God will give us a ministry to use that Word to others.

III. The Call of the Word

A. One does not get this kind of knowledge of the Word without being constantly in the Word of God.

B. The writer tells us how he grows in the Word of God "He awakens {me} morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple" There was a call from God to be in the Word.

C. God calls us- He is giving us the opportunity to learn His Word

D. As we tune into Him- he will awaken us as disciples- those ready to learn His Word and those who are ready to do His Word.

E. Does this verse describe your time with God? Do you sense Him calling you to be His disciple each day? If you answer His Call you will learn His Word.

IV. The Demand of the Word

A. God’s Word is for more than entertainment. God’s Word demands much of us.

B. "The Lord GOD has opened My ear; and I was not disobedient, nor did I turn back."

C. God opens our ears and hearts to His Word but He also wants us to respond.

1. If we obey- He will take us deeper into His Word

2. If we disobey- we will not grow as disciples

D. Note that:

1. Was not disobedient

2. Did not "draw back"

Are you obeying what God is teaching you? Are you growing deeper into His Word? Do you feel Him calling you to be a disciple of His Word? Are you obedient? Have you drawn back from the places God wants to take you?
