WESTSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH

PASTOR: TERRY VAUGHAN

SERMON TITLE: THE SEED IS THE WORD OF GOD

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:16-18

TEXT VERSE: Luke 8:4-8 “And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: (5) A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. (6) And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. (7) And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. (8) And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”

Now I want you to look with me in verse 9-11 “And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? (10) And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. (11) Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.”

I remember when the Lord was talking with Abraham back in the old testament. He said I will bless thy seed. He didn’t say he would bless his seeds but his seed. Thank God there is only one seed tonight and that is the word of God. We find out in verse 11 that the seed is the word of God. I want you to remember that tonight, as we share scriptures about four different types of people that God has laid on our heart.

In verse 12 it says “Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.”

That’s group number one: and that represents a lost person. Someone that has heard the word of God and not accepted it. If you hear the word of God and don’t accept it, you will go away in the same condition as what you were when you came. There’s a lot of people like that today. They’ll come to church one time and they feel like they’ve heard enough to last them and for years you don’t see them anymore. I’m glad that Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost and he does it through his word. The Bible said the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword. Piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and morrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the heart. Just because you come and hear the word of God it does not mean that you are saved by his grace. Just because you attend the house of God and sit on the church pew it does not mean that you are saved. One preacher said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Just because you work a little bit and you’ve done something good for your neighbor it does not mean that you will end up in heaven. I like John 3:6 “Ye must be born again.”

I want to tell you how the devil can come and take the word out of your heart. If all you’re going to do is hear it and not believe it, you’re in bad shape. Abraham heard God’s word and he believed God’s word and that’s what it takes in the world we’re living in tonight. It takes the seed. The word of God. Once you get the word and accept the word, the devil can’t get it out of your soul. God has engraved your salvation in the palm of his hand and no man can pluck it out. When you get saved, you’re saved forever. When my time comes to go home and be with the Lord, I’m not going to be a stranger. I believe they will be expecting me on the other side. Thank God when I heard the word I didn’t give the devil a chance to get it out of my heart. Not only did I hear it but I believed it. I went home that night and called everybody I knew and told them the good news. The Lord saved me.
