Paul told the church last week about Christ being the head over everything and

this week we look at how Christ has freed us.

The Freedom in Christ 2:4 23

A. Freedom from Tempting Words 2:4 7

4 1 say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument.

5 For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ.

6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

From of Christ’s teaching man has been trying to change His words and this is what Paul is telling them.

1. 2 TIMOTHY 4:3 4

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,

4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

The only way to prevent this is to be firmly rooted in God’s word. The only way for this to happen is if we know the word of God and the only way to know the word of God is to study.

2. 2 TIMOTHY 2:15

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. KJV

2 TIMOTHY 2:15 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. NASU

3. EPHESIANS 3:17 19

17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

B. Freedom from Empty Philosophy 2:8 10

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,

10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;

philosophy ie; study of truth, systematic view, theory, reasoned doctrine, metaphysics, logical knowledge, critical study and logic. All are from man not God. They all leave man wanting more they all lack the meat to fill man, but God does not. There is a completion or a filling up, in him, so as to leave nothing wanting. This is true in respect: (1) to the wisdom which is needful to guide us;

(2) the atonement to be made for sin;

(3) the merit by which a sinner can be justified; and

(4) the grace which is needful to sustain us in the trials, and to aid us in the duties, of life.

1. GALATIANS 4:1-4

1 Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything,

2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father.

3 So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world.

4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,

C. Freedom from the Judgment of Men 2:11 17

11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the

removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;

12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him

through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He

made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,

14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was

hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them,

having triumphed over them through Him.

16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a
