Summary: Too many churches are allowing open sinful practices by their members to continue. Preachers who confront these issues are often fired. Here’s a sermon that addresses this problem.

The Tolerant Church Disappoints Jesus

Revelation 2:18-29

18 "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ’These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.

20Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.

22Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.

23I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

24Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.

25But hold fast what you have till I come.

26And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations--

27’He shall rule them with a rod of iron;

They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’--

as I also have received from My Father;

28and I will give him the morning star.

29He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." ’

Today I’m going to tell you story about a young preacher named John Hale. Back in 1903, Brother Hale left his home and traveled to Arizona. He heard that there was a need for the Gospel to be preached to the minors in that area of the country. When he rode his mule into Paradise, Arizona, he found a small community. The economy was clearly based on mining. There was no jail. Persons arrested by the town sheriff were chained to a tree. There was a general store, but the major trade in Paradise was in liquor. There were 13 saloons and most of them had dance hall girls who earned a living by serving as prostitutes! Brother Hale was surprised to find that there was a church here. William Barnes who operated the General Store welcomed Brother Hale to the town. The local church was in need of a pastor and the church folks would surely jump at the chance to hear some good Bible preaching.

More of that story a little later!

Thyatira is a good church with good people.

However, it has been infiltrated with people

who would draw off believers into immorality.

The good people of this church stand by and do nothing!

The church in Thyatira was not a big church.

Little churches have several advantages over a big church!

However, in a small church,

powerful people can have a larger effect than in a big church.

Point #1

Jesus knows what’s going on in the church.

Rev. 2:18 "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ’These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire,

The eyes of fire signify that Jesus sees all.
