The Wisemen

Matthew 2:1-12

Introduction:

According to history and a little tradition from the beginning of time God’s children have been waiting for the Messiah and according to tradition the Magi came based upon signs and knowledge. We’re living in a time when people fall into one of three categories. Let’s look at each one for a moment.

I. Those who are Complacent (or occupying)

Mat 2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. (8)And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

•Herod was troubled not convicted

•Jerusalem was troubled due to the possible wrath of Herod.

•He wasn’t particularly concerned about the future he was focused more on the present and was worried he was going to loose his position.

•The Pharisees knew the Scripture and the prophecies concerning the Messiah & based on their actions they weren’t really expecting Him to show up any time soon. (Matt 21:12-17)

II. Those Who are Seeking (spiritually hungry)

Mat 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, (2) Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

•They had studied the prophecies and knew the Word

•They were seeking a sign or word concerning the coming of the Messiah

•They were hungry and curious enough that they recognized the signs when they appeared

•They did more than study they wanted satisfaction

•They went forth to get the answers promised in the scriptures

III. Those Who are Seeking & Finding (revelation and satisfaction)

Mat 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. (11)And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

•The knew about the prophecies, they studied the traditions and they sought out the truth.

•They found what they were looking for and their hunger was satisfied

•The response was the only natural one; they fell down and worshipped when they came into the presence of Jesus.

•They left know everything had been fulfilled and that God had come to earth.
