Summary: In chapter twelve we see three characters presented as a woman, a child and the dragon.

A Woman, a Child and a Dragon

Revelation 12:1-17

In the later verses of Chapter eleven we mention that God is preparing this world to become the kingdom of His Son. Here in Chapter twelve we have one who is doing everything possible to prevent the will of God. Satan is has been opposing the working of God since the beginning.

See: Rev. 12:1-2

1. A Woman

We are told that this woman is clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown with Twelve stars.

This woman is the reference to the nation of Israel.

See: Genesis 37:9 Joseph in his dream mentions his father Jacob as the sun, his mother as the moon and his brethren as stars

2. A Child

Vs.2 And she being with child

Vs.5 She brought forth a man child…

• He was to rule all nations

Mention: Psalms 2:8-9 Christ will break the nations with a rod of iron

See: Daniel 2:44-45 God has a set time in which His Son will reign on this earth and Daniel tells us that the dream is certain

Mention: Rev. 11:15 the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord…

• He was caught up unto God…

Mention: Psalms 110:1 My LORD said unto my Lord sit thou at my right hand until I make thy enemies thy footstool.

This child is Jesus the Christ!

Mention: Genesis 3:15 The seed of the woman

“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven”

Mention: Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the LORD Himself shall give you a sign, Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

3. A Dragon

See: Rev. 12:3-4

Notice the description given concerning this dragon:

• A great red dragon

• Seven heads, and seven crowns

• Ten horns

See: Daniel 7:24 The ten horns are the ten kings or kingdoms

See: Rev. 17:9-12 Here we see a possible explanation of these things

What we do know is that the dragon is Satan himself

Rev. 12:4 Tell us that Satan drew a third of the angels in heaven with him ref. Vs.7, 9

Here we are given some important things that we should know about Satan:

a. He is seeking the kingdom

See: Rev. 12:7-9 We read of how he was cast out of heaven

Mention: Luke 10:18 Jesus said I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven

Mention: Isaiah 14:12-14 Satan attempt to exalt his throne above the stars of God

b. He influences the evil leaders of this world

Mention: Ezekiel 28:11-19 He is referred to as the king of Tyrus

Also: Daniel 10:13-21Satan is the prince of the kingdoms of Persia and Grecia that followed

Then: John 12:31, 14:30 He is referred to by Jesus and the prince of this world

See: Rev. 12:4 His attempt to devour the child as soon as it was born

Mention: Matt. 2:16 Satan influences Herod to killed every child in Bethlehem 2 yrs or younger attempting to killed baby Jesus

See: Rev. 12:13-17 He persecutes the people of God especially the Jews

Flood = A force of people Isaiah 59:19 “When the enemy shall come like a flood”

Point: God has protected Israel through all its persecutions as so it is with every believer

See: Vs.17 which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ

c. He influences people

See: Rev. 12:12 woe to the inhabiters of the earth

Mention: Genesis 3 He deceived Eve

There are several things are obviously taught in the scriptures of how Satan influences people

I. Music

Satan was the chief musicians in heaven ref. Ezekiel 28:13 The workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee the day thou wast created.

II. Popularity

III. Money

The doctrine of Balaam was wages of unrighteousness and popularity according to 2 Peter & the book of Jude.

Satan knows his time is short so he has fashion this world with the intent of influencing people to follow after him.

See: 2 Cor. 4:3-4 he has blinded the minds of the lost and in some ways has used distracted believers from shining forth the light of the gospel.

See: Rev. 12:11 He is only overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony
