Summary: Where there is lack of unity lays dysfunction

“Where there is lack of unity lays dysfunction”. The Greek translation for unity is (henotes) meaning to function as one, unanimity, agreement. The English translation parallels to the Greek interpretation to be in harmony, or union. What does unification look like? or what does it mean to be unified? Just imagine the effect on our government, our homes, and our churches, if we would become unified. As we proclaim the essence of our faith we must work in cohesive harmony to accomplish the work of Christ.

In this text there are three reassurances which unites this church

I. He reassured their confidence vs. 9, 10

to really understand this text we would have to abstract the historical context. The suffering of the Jewish Christian was being tempted to leave Christianity and return back to their religion of old. Not only were they deserting the church but also leaving the faith. As results they fell out of unity because they suffered great persecution. Not only the Roman government, but especially from their own immediate family and kin ostracized them, and from their own nation people. In vs. 9 the writer says but, beloved we are confident, confident the root word in the Greek “peisma” a ship’s cables it to secure the anchor. He says as sure as chain secures the anchor of a boat. I’m confident of better things which lead you to salvation. Do you remember when you walk down that idle and gave God your life? You confessed with your mouth and believed in your heart that Jesus was raised from the dead. God is excepting great things from His people.

II. He reassured value vs.10

the writer here wants this church to function in the same mind. The people of this church were expelled from the synagogue, being denied the privilege of attending the synagogue; they lost their jobs, their homes for the sake of Christian. I know some of you ostracize one another.. How many times have we felt like leaving the church or throwing in the towel? vs. 10a, “God has not forgotten”. 10b, God want forget the work you’ve done. Vs. 10, and the love you’ve shown and are still showing. When we function as one mind there are great possibility of experiencing the awesomeness of God presences. We are valuable to the Kingdom of God.

III. He reassured promise vs.11, 12

surely you shall receive the hope of promise. Look if we remain unified God has some fringe benefits; God promises His love never fails; 1 Chronicles 16:34 says, Give thanks unto to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. God promise to heal a nation; 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, if my people who are called by my name would humble himself and turn from their wicked ways, the I will hear from heaven forgive their sins and healed their land. God promise to finish the work He started in us. Philippians 4:19 God shall supply all of your needs according to his riches in glory. God promise of our names is written in heaven; Luke 10:20 do not rejoice in miracle but rejoice because you name is written in the Lambs book of life. He reassured confidence, he reassured value, and he reassured promise. God has not forgotten your sacrifice, commitment and dedication. Therefore if we remain unified we can continue to build a stronger Church in Jesus Christ.
