Summary: When Isaac went down to Gerar because of famine, he had to keep digging wells. A message of encouragement.

Well, Well, Well (Isaac)

Genesis 26:12-25

Intro: God had blessed Isaac abundantly. Vs 12-14

-It seems that Isaac had to keep digging wells.

-Wells were important especially in a famine. Vs 1

I. The wells of his father.

A. Gen. 20:1 Abraham had “sojourned” there.

1.The Philistines had filled them up.

2.Abimelech sent Isaac away. Vs 16

3.Isaac dug the wells again. Vs 18

B.We must re-dig the wells of those who have gone

on before. (winning souls, building a church,

raising our families, etc.)

II. The well of Esek. Vs 19-20

A.It was a spring.

1.very desirable

2.Provided fresh water.

3.Translated “Living water”

4.Claimed by the world. Vs 20

a.The herdmen of Gerar are a type of the world.

b.The world tries to steel what is ours.

(1)Holidays like Christmas and Easter.

(2)Language like “born again” “god” etc.

B. There was and argument and thus the

name. “Esek” (contention)

III. The well of Sitnah. Vs 21

A. Another fight.

B. Sitnah – “strife”

IV. The well of Rehoboth. Vs 22

A.Another well was dug.

B.This time there was no argument, no strife.

C.They felt like they could stay here.

1.Rehoboth – wide place.

2.Now there was plenty of room.

3.God has made room for us.

(1)A type of Salvation

(2)John 14:6

V. The well at Beersheba. Vs 23-25

A. They left Rehoboth and went to Beersheba.

B. " well of the sevenfold oath"

1.It was the place where Abraham had given

seven ewe lambs to Abimelech because of a

covenant between them. Gen. 21:22-32.

2.The well had been dug before.

C. The Lord appears to Isaac here. Vs 24

1.I am with thee.

2.I will bless thee.

3.I will multiply thee

4. The covenant was passed from Abraham to

Isaac.

D.Isaac’s response. Vs 25

1.He builds an altar.

a.For Sanctification.

b. For Sacrifice.

c. For Service.

d. For supplication (called on the name of

the Lord)

2. He pitched his tent there.

a.For shelter.

b.A tent because he was a sojourner.

(1)This was not the Promised Land.

(2)This world is not our home.

c.He dug a well there.

(a)A well for survival.

(b)A well for salvation.

Conclusion:

When the wells are plugged up…keep digging.

When the wells are plugged up…keep moving.

Jesus said “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

John 7:38

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Come to the well of “living water”
