Summary: Let’s look at the Bible and see if we can define SIN?

WHAT IS SIN?

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

I. TODAY SIN HAS BECOME A BY-WORD, A JOKE, AND WE TEND TO DENY GOD’S JUDGMENTS ON SIN.

A. S-I-N The center of sin is I.

The center of Lucifer is I.

The center of pride is I.

B. SIN IS ALWAYS SELFISH. BEING IDLE AND LAZY CAN LEAD TO SIN. SIN IS ENMITY WITH GOD. Sin brings jeopardy to man.

Sin breaks the heart of God and can break fellowship with His Holy Plan.

SIN CAN BECOME A STUMBLING BLOCK AND A THORN OF REBELLION.

C. All unfaithfulness is disobedience to God and thus it is sin.

We can go along with the world today and call sin a sickness or disease, but never forget sin is much more than a sickness, it is transgression against God.

D. Sin will always take you farther than you planned on going.

Sin will always cost you more than you planned on paying.

Sin will always keep you longer than you planned on staying.

E. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS HAVE:

1. 4 COMMANDMENTS TOWARD GOD.

2. 6 COMMANDMENTS TOWARD MAN.

II. The first lesson to recall about sin is that GOD FORGIVES SIN.

The blood of Jesus cleanses from all sin.

A. SIN IS UNIVERSAL TO MAN.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

B. ALL HAVE SINNED --- if we sin we do have an advocate.

Jesus will plead our cause before the Father ...

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ

the righteous:

C. What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus ---

1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

D. GOD IS FAITHFUL TO FORGIVE IF MAN HAS GODLY SORROW, ACKNOWLEDGES, CONFESSES, REPENTS AND TURNS FROM HIS EVIL WAYS.

Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

III. SIN HAS MANY BIBLICAL MEANINGS:

1. TRANSGRESSION, WRONG DOING.

2. WICKEDNESS, INJUSTICE.

3. ENSLAVING OR DECEIVING POWER OF SIN.

4. DISBELIEF OR UNFAITHFULNESS.

5. LAWLESSNESS OR INQUITY.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

6. PERSUMPTUOUS SIN.

7. SECRET SIN.

8. SIN AGAINST THE FLESH.

9. SIN AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT.

10. SIN IS CONFORMITY TO TRANSGRESSION OF GOD’S LAW.

11. A LACK OF LOVE AND SUBMISSION.

12. A SIN UNTO DEATH.

IV. LET US LOOK AT SOME OF THE BUZZ WORDS THAT RELATE TO SIN.

A. MOTIVE, MOTIVATION: ( Why do I do what I do?)

Spur. Stimulus to action.

What causes a person to act, need or desire.

A recurrent phase.

The driving power.

B. IDENTIFY: ( Ask those in AA meetings, to recovery one must admit I have a problem!)

To acknowledge, to become aware, to see, to accept personal responsibility.

C. COMMIT,COMMISSION : (Adam-Eve, David-Bathsheba)

To carry into deliberate, planned action.

To bind or be bound.

To perpetrate an offense.

TO BE PLACED IN A MENTAL INSTITUTION,

Commit. To furnish.

D. OMISSION: (Jonah, 5 foolish virgins)

Matthew 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

Omit - to leave out. To fail to perform or to fail to make use of ...

To tire and give up

E. NEGLECT: (Many boast of what they used to do? They: TELL IT LIKE IT WAS?)

Luke 12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

To give little attention or respect.
