Summary: How much of what passes as "worship" in churches truly is worship according to the Bible? When we get past eisegesis and get into exegesis, we will discover that worship in the Bible has a whole different meaning than what we see around us.

WHAT IS WORSHIP?

Why do we “go to church?”

No reason?

“Everybody in my family goes to church, so I just go too.”

Have too?

“My mother said I have to go to church.”

Duty?

“You have to, right?”

Feel good?

“I feel better about myself when I go to church”

Why do I “go to church?”

To satisfy myself?

To cater to (serve) myself?

We must ask ourselves . . .

Whose church is it?

Acts 20:28 …. the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

If we really believe it is the LORD’S church . . .

Then we should cater to GOD

How do we do that?

We find out what PLEASES HIM

We find out what HE WANTS

How can we know what GOD wants?

We must read and study the Bible!

2Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Some modern dictionaries define “worship” as:

1. A feeling of profound love and admiration

2. (religion) show devotion to (a deity)

But, “what saith the LORD” about “worship?”

Let’s let the Bible speak for itself.

Let’s see how the BIBLE presents it (exegesis), without influence of our own ideas, beliefs, or traditions (eisegesis)

First: A word about what is considered “worship” in many churches today:

These days in churches, it seems common to see such things as . . .

“I love you Lord!”

“I’m going to worship you forever!”

“I will live my life for you!”

Peter said similar things . . . Scripture says … Matthew 26:33, 35

33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.

35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

We should NOT rely on the flesh to demonstrate anything good toward GOD (John 2:24-25)

But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

What happened next?

Peter ran away and later denied that He knew Christ

Are we filled with emotion? (I … )

Are we filled with the Spirit? (Lord … )

Where is the emphasis in our songs? GOD or ME?

GOD-Centered or MAN-Centered

CHRIST-Exalting or MAN-Exalting

Song: Mahal Na Mahal Kita

(“Mahal kita” = I Love You)

Mahal na mahal kita

Mahal na mahal kita

Mahal na mahal kita

Are we celebrating how much we love God?

Or are we celebrating how much GOD loves us?

Isaiah 57:12 I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works

Scripture says … 1John 4:19 We love him because he first loved us.

What evidence of love?

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Ezekiel 33:31 … they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
