Crucifixion – Attitude of a Servant - 2004

Sitting down relaxing one night a couple of weeks ago reading the paper, news is on

• Next thing I hear Susan telling me about this elderly couple who were in the doctor’s surgery.

• They had just moved house and they were having a hard time finding anyone to help them trim some trees and shrubs in their yard

• I rolled my eyes and buried my head deeper in the paper as I had a good idea where this was going

• Then came those words, “So I told them you would come and help them”

• Now I know everyone thinks ministers have lots of spare time on their hands, and we can just everything and respond to the latest emergency

• But for some reason this year has been non stop

• So I’m sitting there wondering how I’m going to squeeze this job into my week

• “Don’t they have any relatives who can help?” “Yes they do have relatives but they can’t find the time”

• “How big a job is it?” “Don’t know”

• “Anyway I don’t have a trailer. How am I going to haul all the stuff away”

• Meanwhile in the back of my mind there is this nagging voice saying, you really should help out

• Plus, I been trying to live my life by this new motto - “Who can I serve today?”

• Obviously by my initial reaction this was still just a warm and fuzzy concept

• So I finally gave in and told Susan to figure a time when I could come around and take a look at the job

• So after work the next day, Susan and I trudge around to their place

• They are a lovely couple, Doris and Graham, but she loves to talk and they had to show us their new home

• So something that I thought would only take 10 minutes dragged on and on

• I also told them I could cut the trees down, but I had no way to haul the stuff away

• She said, that’s okay because we have a van and a trailer

• So we finally got out into the yard and looked at the job

• Now when I get going with a chain saw, its best to lock the kids and the dogs up, things happen fast

• In fact I love trimming with a chain saw, forget those big loppers or secateurs

• Just ask my Mum. She used to have a big leopard tree in her front yard, now it’s a trunk and four stumpy arms

• So I figured this job will only take about an hour and a half, two hours at the most, especially if I didn’t have to haul the stuff away

• So Friday morning I rock up with all the gear and as usual things don’t always go to plan

• First of all, the job had grown to about twice the size and worst of all, it soon became obvious that they had assumed that all they had to do was supply a trailer and I would haul the stuff away

• Anyone who does this type of work knows hauling stuff away is the time consuming part of the job

• Got to cut the stuff up so it will fit on the trailer, got to load it up, tie it down, and then drive to and from the dump

• The nearest dump in Ballarat is all the way across town so I elected to dump it at my place as its closer

• So the two hour job turned into five

• Of course they were happy as pigs in mud and she was hugging and kissing me trying to give me money

Want you to take a look at your hands – hold them up

 What kind of hands are they? Are they servant’s hands? Are they metaphorically dirty, calloused from years of service

 Or are they pampered hands, carefully manicured, soft, clean, and smooth

 Jesus hands bear the signs of service, his hands carry a cruel scar

Matthew 27:35 (NKJV) 35 Then they crucified Him

• In that short sentence of four words is all the Bible uses to describe the greatest act of service the world has known

There are two things that make us most like Jesus Christ

 First is when we forgive others

 The second is when we serve others

 You and I have been called to a life of service

 He said, Mark 10:41-45 (NKJV) 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. 42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
