Summary: Here's a sermon to preach when one of the well know couples in your congregation has an anniversary.
"WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN!"
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
24Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
26that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
27that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
29For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
30For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
31"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
32This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Today...Steve and Janice Shaw...
are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary
With that in mind...
I'd like to tell you a story about marriage.
Many years ago on the Island of Oahu
in the Hawaiian Islands...
the people observed an unusual custom.
A young man who wanted to get married...
would buy the girl he loved.
He would give a certain number of cows...
to the father of the girl he wanted to marry.
The going rate for a young Hawaiian girl was 3 cows.
A very attractive girl might bring as much as 4 cows.
There were stories of one young girl many, many years ago...
Whose parents received 5 cows for her.
But that was an extremely high price to pay.
Well, there was once a man who had 2 daughters.
One of them was not considered very attractive.
She was overweight.
Her hair was always a mess.
She wore sloppy clothes...and she walked like an old cow.
The father had already made up his mind...
He would be willing to accept 2 cows for her...
Or maybe just 1...just to get her married off.
But the other sister was very beautiful.
The father knew he could get a good deal for her.
Maybe...just maybe...she would bring in 5 cows.
One day, a rich young bachelor came to visit.
The father was certain that the young batcher...
Had come to inquire about the beautiful daughter.
He was interested in the unattractive daughter.
Since this boy was rich...
The father began to think in terms of getting 3 cows
For this ugly daughter.
Can you imagine how surprised he was...
When the rich young bachelor
Came back a few days later with 10 cows?
Obviously...this young man was like Steve Shaw.
He found the woman he wanted to marry...
and he showed how much he loved her.
I don't know how much Steve had to pay for Janice...
but I'm sure he saw Janice as a 10 cow woman.
POINT #1. THE HUSBAND SHOULD LOVE HIS WIFE
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
NOW...Look at Verse 28
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
And look at Verse 33
33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself,
Listen to what the Bible says in Colossians 3:19
Husbands, love your wives...
Men...there's no way around it!
God's Word has given us a commandment!
And what is it? LOVE YOUR WIFE!
And what kind of love are we suppose to have for them?
Well...the word "LOVE" in these verses...
comes from the Greek word: AGAPE!
What kind of love is that?
It's the same kind of love Jesus has for us!
He gave His life for us! AMEN?
Look again at Verse 25:
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her
Is that how you love your wife?
Does that describe the way you treat your wife?
