When Men Walk With God - Part 2 Series

Summary: Great things happen when Men Walk With God. Last week we talked about Enoch and Noah. This week we will talk about Abraham and King David.
Micah 6:8 ESV - He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
INTRODUCTION
• Last week I delivered the first of a two part series called “When Men Walk With God”. Some of the points we covered include:
• God’s greatest desire is to be in relationship with us.
• There were many who walked with God in the Bible.
• We can walk with God today just as they did in the Bible.
• I shared insights from two men who walked with God.
• Enoch
• Noah
• Today we will talk about two more and see what we can glean from their examples.
I. ABRAHAM
A. What’s in a name?
12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
1. ABRAHAM - a contraction of ABRAM (before God changed his name) meaning “father of many, multitude”.
2. V1,V4 - Abram had to leave the familiar and launch out unto the unknown. He is known in theological circles as “The Father of Faith”.
a) “The familiar” will hold you back.
b) If “the familiar” could produce God’s promises for you then you would have them already.
Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
3. V2 - Four promises that rest on the other side of obedience.
a) The promise of Greatness (a great nation)
b) The promise of Prosperity (I will bless thee)
c) The promise of Supernatural Influence (make thy name great)
d) The promise of Empowerment (thou shalt be a blessing)
1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

b) The Blessing of Abraham has come upon the just

II. KING DAVID
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
A. What’s in a name? Points to Ponder
1. DAVID - In Hebrew the meaning is: “Beloved or friend”.
2. David was passed over by man but accepted by God.
1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
B. Lessons from the life of David
1. When others reject us God can still raise us up. (all of his brothers were considered before him and the Prophet had to specifically ask if there were any more children)
2. You don’t have to be “pretty” for God to use you! (David was a ruddy, red faced, boy) when God had the Prophet Samuel anoint him to be the next King of Israel.
