Summary: If Jesus is alive where is He and what will happen next?

Last Friday, Good Friday, we pondered about the question “Where is Jesus?” With the resurrection in mind let us continue to learn about where Jesus Christ is and how this all relate to us. Before we look into where Jesus is right now and where He will be in the future, let us briefly note where Jesus has been.

Where was Jesus before the creation of the universe and people? Before you and me and all this stuff we see including the entire universe formed, where was Jesus? From Matthew 1:23 and Colossians 1:15-17, Jesus Christ is God and so, Jesus along with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit were in an eternal place called heaven before the creation of everything else!

Think about that for a moment, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were sufficient together in their eternal home called heaven; but then they created other beings to share their heaven. God created you and me so that they can share their eternal home with us! God wants us to be with Him forever!

Now, how does the Bible start??

and so, where was Jesus during Creation?

Colossians 1:16 - During the Creation of the universe and man, Jesus Christ was present since everything was created through Him and for Him! Again, take a pause and think about this for a moment; every person in the world was created to belong to Jesus Christ, if a person does not belong to Jesus Christ, they chose not to be; God cannot be blamed! A person either accepts they belong to Jesus or choose to be separated from God, just like the devil!

Now, after the creation of the universe and man, where was Jesus?

God tells us throughout the Old Testament, Jesus Christ appeared to men in various forms and was involved in God’s plan for people on earth!

And so we come to this weekend, Where was Jesus about 2000 years ago?

1st of all, we celebrate Christmas because God Jesus Christ became a human being here on earth!

2ndly, Jesus Christ lived on earth as a person till He was about 33 years old.

But then what happened when Jesus was about 33 years old on earth?

We read in Philippians 2:6-8, Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

About 2000 years ago Jesus Christ hung on a cross to die and was buried for 3 days!

Now, if Jesus Christ is God, why did He become a human being to die?

Because all people have sinned against God, including you and me, there was a need for cleansing in order to get back to a Holy God; Jesus Christ took the penalty of our sins, so by our full belief in Christ make us righteous to God.

Jesus Christ and His death is the only way back to a Holy God (show picture).

And so, where was Jesus about 2000 years ago? He became a human being on earth on Christmas day; Jesus lived on earth till He was about 33 years old; and then here’s what we read in 1 Peter 3:18-22 – For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

And so, where was Jesus 2000 years ago when he died?

3rdly, Jesus’ physical body died and was buried for 3 days but His Spirit was alive and well, proclaiming the miraculous work of forgiveness!

And so Jesus Christ needed to physically suffer and die for our sins but what good is a dead God?

we note in 1 Corinthians 15, as well as many other Scriptures, Jesus did not remain in the grave. Jesus’ physical body rose from the dead and appeared to over 500 people, perfectly completed in body and spirit!
