Plot: William Wallace is a Scottish rebel who leads an uprising against the cruel English ruler, Edward the Longshanks, who wishes to inherit the crown of Scotland for himself. Wallace died for his belief. Would his effort have been any more effective if he gave up the fight, and asked for mercy? Wallace and his band of Scottish Clansmen were confronted with the reality that they must fight the English if they are to be free from their oppressive rule.

We have our own fight. Our fight is to do what is right, and live as God wants us to live, in freedom. Free from the struggle with sin and death. However, we cannot win the fight, and there is nothing that we can do for ourselves to overcome it. Jesus has done this for us. So that we can alter our course and live free.

ILLUSTRATION: Mount Erebus Flight 910

Air NZ flights to Antarctica began in February 1977

28 November 1979 the 14th flight crashed into Mount Erebus,

killing all 237 passengers and 20 crewmembers aboard.

19 days before the flight the pilots were given a copy of previous flight plans.

Hours before the scheduled flight, the flight coordinates were changed

The flight crew were not informed of the change

The new path had them flying directly into Mt Erebus 45 kilometres to the east of the previous plan

They pilots believed they were flying over frozen ice down the middle of McMurdo Sound

A string of eerie coincidences made it impossible navigate visually. Because the air was clear and beneath the cloud layer, the white of the ice blended with the white of the mountain, with no contrast to show the sloping up of the land - a whiteout.

The crew and passengers would not have been aware of the impact before they perished.

My Uncle and his fiancé were on that flight

Hence my personal interest to know what happened

Found a couple of books on the disaster visiting parents

Gave insight to some of the contributors

1. Two seeming identical paths

2. Blinded by whiteout conditions

3. Changing our course

1. Two seemingly identical paths

Living for self vs Living for God

Destination is similar, but not the same

Isaac’s inheritance/God’s Promise -- NUMEROUS -- Ishmael’s inheritance/Hatred

ALTERNATIVE PATHS

Slavery/Destruction FREEDOM/ETERNAL LOVE

2. Blinded by whiteout

Enslaved by religion and/or selfish desire (Already Christians)

true for all ppl

Religion, Law = Sin

Christ has rescued us from our sins (we are now FREE) NB: we cannot rescue our selves

Some ppl Freedom means “live for self”

Fall back into sin

3. Changing our course

Living for God

Not law

Making right choices

Galatians 5:22-23

Fruits of the Spirit

Benefits of living for God

Product of the work of God’s Spirit

Not living under the law.
