Summary: Why did Jesus go from infinity to infant?

WHY A BABY?

I received an email recently that asked some pretty interesting questions. Questions such as, can you cry under water? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? How is it that we put a man on the moon before we figured out how to put wheels on luggage? Why do people say they slept like a baby when babies tend to wake up every two or three hours? Why do people pay to go to the top of tall buildings just to pay again to look at things on the ground? Here is a great one that I have wondered for ages. Why do toasters always have a setting that will burn your toast to a horrible crisp that no human being could ever possibly eat?

After laughing hysterically for moments, I continued to read on. Why does a dog get mad if you blow in his face then stick his head outside the window of a moving car? Why do we press harder on a remote control when it doesn’t work? Why do you push the elevator button multiple times when we are in a hurry, does it make the elevator arrive quicker? Here’s one for you bankers. Why does a bank charge a fee for insufficient funds when there isn’t any money to cover it? Here’s another. Does the Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same lyrics? And why did you just stop to sing both songs to see if they indeed did? And I personally have one for you that is more mind blowing than any other question ever authored in the history of mankind.

Why a baby?

Seriously, why did Almighty God residing in the heavens above make his triumphant entrance to our planet through the skin of a human infant too weak to even burp himself? As our Interim Pastor Jim Wheeler put it, “He went from infinity to infant.”

God could have commanded his legions of angels who sing from the heavens above and made a giant assembly with trumpets, and harps, and other ancient musical devices that we hear playing throughout the scriptures. He could have rolled out a massive red carpet, or even the clouds into a marvelous display of a downward spiral staircase in order to proclaim his greatness. He could have humbled all of civilization to its knees for a moment of silence by showing them great displays of fireworks in the skies complete with falling stars and bright lightning. He could have knocked out all the evil in the world upon entering or made examples of all the kings of the world by putting them in their rightful place of submission to a higher authority. But he didn’t.

The book of Matthew states, “Look! The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means, God with us. When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife, but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth, to whom he named Jesus.”

Amen.
