Summary: Many church people do not read the Bible. This sermon outlines the results.

Why Should We Read The Bible?

Psalm 119:33-40

33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it. 36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.

37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.

38 Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You. 39 Turn away my reproach which I dread, For Your judgments are good. 40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness.

Unfortunately, many church people seldom read the Bible.

They may go to church and listen to sermons,

but opening their Bibles to read is often neglected.

Yes, they can learn from the sermons they hear,

but they seem to lack a love for God’s word.

No one knows for sure

who the Holy Spirit inspired to write Psalm 119.

Whomever it was, he loved the Word of God.

He wanted to walk in God’s will.

There are many ways in which a man may walk.

There is a right way and a wrong way.

Choosing the right way involves knowing the right way.

When a person chooses the right way,

he or she chooses a way which will lead to God’s blessing.

When a person chooses the wrong way,

he or she chooses a way which will lead to God’s cursing.

Fortunately, God does not leave us without direction.

God left us a Guide and that Guide is the Word of God.

People can pervert the ways of the Lord.

A good example is Barjesus, a sorcerer and false prophet

with whom Paul dealt,

10 and said, "O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?

Unfortunately, there are many like Barjesus today!

That’s why we need to know what God’s word says!

Point #1. There’s only one way to salvation.

John 14:6 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Many people claim that there are other ways to Heaven.

No! Jesus said there is only one way to get to Heaven.

In fact, He said He is the only Door

through which a person may enter Heaven,

9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

No one else gave his life on Calvary for our salvation.

No man ever gave his life for the sheep as did Jesus.

No man ever arose from the dead as Jesus did.

Acts 4:12 says, 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Jesus is the only Way to Heaven.

Point #2. There is the way of the righteous.

Psalm 1:6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Many times, the Word of God mentions this way:

Proverbs 8:20, I traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice,

Proverbs 12:28, In the way of righteousness is life, And in its pathway there is no death.

Proverbs 16:31,The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, If it is found in the way of righteousness.

There is a way distinctive to righteousness. This is said in contrast to the way of the unrighteous.

3. There is the way of the unrighteous.

Proverbs 13:15 Good understanding gains favor, But the way of the unfaithful is hard.

If the righteous think their way is hard,

the way of the transgressor is harder.

I’d much rather have hard times for doing right

than for evil doing!

Just like righteousness, unrighteousness is a choice.

Joshua 24:14-15 says,

14 "Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Point #4. There is the way of the Lord.

Proverbs 10:29 The way of the LORD is strength for the upright, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.
