Summary: Many Christians have accepted scientists claims that the earth is millions of years old. Others have doubts about the accuracy of Genesis. This sermon deals with what happens when Christians fail to know what Genesis says and believe it.
Why Should We Study Genesis?
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
2For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good,
4traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
6For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,
7always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;
9but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.
10But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance,
11persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra--what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
13But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
15and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Why should we study the Book of Genesis?
Look again at Verse 16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
Notice, Paul says "ALL" scripture.
This means all of the Bible was given by inspiration of God.
All of it is profitable! Amen?
All of it is helpful to teach us doctrine. Amen?
All of it is useful in scolding and correcting us. Amen?
All of it is beneficial for instructing us how to be righteous. Amen?
But here’s something to think about.
Most Bible experts say Paul wrote this letter to Timothy
around 66 or 67 A.D.
So what scripture existed at that time?
Did the New Testament exist
when the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write 2 Timothy 3:16? NO!
Now, don’t misunderstand me!
I firmly believe in the Bible we use today.
My point is this:
The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write 2 Timothy 3:16. Amen?
So, in effect, God was saying that the Old Testament
is just as valuable as the New Testament.
Yes, Christianity as we believe it to be,
is based on the teachings of the New Testament.
But to view the Old Testament as being less important
is a big mistake.
In fact, critics of the Bible often point to the Book of Genesis
as a big reason for ignoring what the Bible says.
Critics say the account of Creation in Genesis
is unrealistic and unscientific.
Evolution is being taught in our schools today for that very reason.
How many think it’s terrible
that Creation cannot be taught in our schools?
Have you ever heard about The "Scopes Trial"?
Today, I’m going to tell you about that trial.
The ACLU offered to defend anyone accused of teaching the theory of evolution in defiance of the Butler Act. George Rappleyea, who managed several local mines, convinced a group of businessmen in Dayton, Tennessee that the controversy of such a trial would give Dayton much needed publicity. With their agreement, he called in his friend, 24-year-old John Scopes, who was Clark County High School’s football coach and a substitute science teacher. Scopes told the group, "If you can prove that I’ve taught evolution and that I can qualify as a defendant, then I’ll be willing to stand trial." Scopes even urged students to testify against him. He was indicted on April 24, 1925 after three students testified against him at Scopes’ request to the grand jury. The owner of the Baltimore Sun newspaper paid his bail of $500
Three-time Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan who was raised in nearby Salem, Illinois was called in to help the prosecution despite the fact that he had not tried a case in court for 36 years. In response, Clarence Darrow, a staunch atheist, volunteered his services to the defense.
Journalists from around the world, including The Baltimore Sun, which was also paying part of the defense’s expenses, covered the trial. More than 200 newspaper reporters from all parts of the country and two from London were in Dayton. Twenty-two telegraphers sent out 165,000 words per day on the trial over thousands of miles of telegraph wires hung for the purpose. Trained chimpanzees performed on the courthouse lawn. Chicago’s WGN radio station broadcast the trial for the first on-the-scene coverage of a criminal trial. Two movie cameramen had their film flown out daily in a small plane from a specially prepared airstrip.
