Summary: We have degraded the Lord's Day to our own hurt.

Work Or Worship?

Proposition: You must sanctify the Lord’s Day!

I. Because of the principle of the Sabbath! Mark 2:27

A. It was given for physical rest! Deuteronomy 5:13-14, Exodus 23:12, 31:15,17, 34:21, 35:2, Nehemiah 10:31, 13:15-22

B. It was given for a day of worship! Ezekiel 20:12, Exodus 31:13, Leviticus 19:30, Deuteronomy 5:15, Psalms 92 (written for the Sabbath), Isaiah 58:13, 66:23

II. Because of the preeminence of Christ! Colossians 1:18

A. The spiritual has priority over the worldly! Colossians 3:1,2, Matthew 6:33,34, 8:21,22

B. He demands sacrifice! Matthew 16:24-27, Luke 14:33, Acts 2:46

III. Because of His possession of the Believer! I Corinthians 6:19,20

A. Your pleasure is not important! Isaiah 58:13, Luke 17:7-10, I Corinthians 8:17

B. Your attendance is required! Hebrews 10:24,25, 13:17, I Timothy 4:13-16

Disclaimer: It is obvious that some people are required to work Sundays, like first responders, military and medical personnel. They have to have their day of rest on a different day and the church should have services seven days a week and even times for second and third shift people.

I have invited wait staff to church and many have to work Sunday. If Christians did not shop or eat out on Sunday maybe more businesses would become like Chik-fil-a and close so their people could attend church.

The Sabbath was made for the man not man for the Sabbath/Lord’s Day. Science has even concluded that a person should rest one out of seven days for optimum health. Again, if churches would meet the needs of the people there would be opportunities for worship every day as they did in the early church.

Imagine seven churches of like faith with 10-20 members merging. In the South, this would be easy. Congregation would be 70-140. The seven pastors could each take a day and have a worship service every day. Monday through Saturday would most likely be evening services. Now imagine fourteen churches merging making a congregation of 140-280. Still not a mega church. Now you can have church seven days a week and two shifts on six days. Imagine 14 pastors doing outreach and other duties of the church. It might inspire a revival and sinners would be astounded and want to know what happened to the Christians because they are merging instead of splitting. Many splits are due to staff of membership insubordination not doctrinal errors or any biblical reason to leave.
