You Must Be Born Again

Message Point: If you want to be forgiven and have eternal life, you must be born again.

Focus Passage: John 3:1-16

Supplemental Passage: Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. (1 Timothy 1:16)

Introduction: There are three huge gates that lead into the Cathedral of Milan. Over one gate there is an inscription in marble under a beautiful flower bouquet that says, "The things that please are temporary." Over the second gate, there is a cross with this inscription: "The things that disturb us are temporary." However, over the central gate, there is a big inscription saying, "Eternal are the important ones." Source Unknown.

I. Born with a sin nature to die

a. Indeed, I was born guilty. I was a sinner when my mother conceived me. (Psalms 51:5)

b. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23)

c. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

II. Born again to eternal life

a. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15:22)

b. Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)

c. so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:21)

III. Born again to experience a spiritual nature

a. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:6)

b. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. (Galatians 5:16-17)

c. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. (Galatians 6:8)
