About Doug
  • Education: A multi-disciplined background with an A.A. in nursing, B.S. in pre-med, M.Div., and a Ph.D. in counseling
  • Experience: 40 years of health care as a professional or volunteer consultant; 32 years of pastoral ministry as a pastor; and 20 years of counseling as a licensed professional counselor
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: A three year sermon series based on the Psalms. The Psalms capture the heart ache experienced by the faithful, the rebellion of the people of God, hope, joy, celebration, praise, and thanksgiving
  • One of my favorite illustrations: Watching a news broadcast, a family of killer whales chasing a seal in the Arctic waters. The seal found refuge on a flat ice patch. The family which, included two adult whales and a small whale, teamed up to create a wave of water to tilt the ice patch so the seal would slide off. After a couple of passes, wave high enough to cause the seal to slip off was created. Several moments passed when all of a sudden the seal was tossed back up on the ice patch. It was interpreted to be a training mission for the young whale, not a hunt for food. It was awesome to see.
  • Family: A strong emphasis on family as a major part of sharing the word of God and as a basis for evangelism.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Stay grounded in Scripture while being constantly being vigilant with all sorts of literature and daily experiences. One might discover God’s creative hand even with ants crawling on the ground, or a hostile article about Christian faith in the newspaper.
  • Books that have had an impact: The Bible, On Becoming a Person, A Way of Being, The Real Jesus, The Quest for the Historical Jesus, Evidence that Demands a Vertict, The Theology of Hope & The Crucified God (Moltmann), John Wesley & Theology in the Wesleyan Spirit (Outler), A Plain Account of Christian Perfection (Wesley)
  • Hobbies: jogging, walking, listening to Romantic Piano Concertos, reading
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: God loves you.
