Summary: What is being humble.

Sermon Title: Really you sat there, you said that?

Scripture Text: Philippians 2:5-11 NLT

Before we read Gods word I want to speak about Verse 10. It says “every knee should bow many of us have read and learned “every knee shall bow”. Every version of the Bible has been revised; yes the great King James Version too. This shall and should changes as the revising is done and it depends if they are reading it in the present tense or future tense. It depends on the Bible scholars doing the revising. But there is one thing for sure. Looking in the future tense to the time we meet our God at the Great White Throne Judgment it is “shall”; “every knee shall bow” before our God.

I hope that wont be a distraction when I read it because this sermon isn't about that. Its about being humble before our God.

Being humble is both thought and actions on our part.

Now hear the reading of Gods Word:

Philippians 2:5-11 NLT

Our Scriptures Open with a statement that, should/can/may/will, drive us to our knees; V5

5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

6 Though he was God,

he did not think of equality with God

    as something to cling to.

7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;

he took the humble position of a slave

and was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form,

8     he humbled himself in obedience to God

and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor

and gave him the name above all other names,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

The Word of God

for the people of God.

Quote:

According to the American Psychological Association, humility creates a sense of "we-ness" in relationships. Being humble means possessing a better capacity to form cooperative alliances -- a crucial component in strengthening any connections.

Example of Humble: Read or Tell

Ivan Fernandez Anaya, Spanish Runner, Intentionally Loses Race So Opponent Can Win

A Spanish runner has shown the world that sometimes, just sometimes, winning isn’t everything.

Spanish athlete Ivan Fernandez Anaya impressed the world by giving up victory to do the right thing.

According to El Pais, it happened as the 24-year-old raced a cross-country event in Burlada, Navarre.

In second place to Abel Mutai, the Kenyan athlete who won a bronze medal in the London Olympics, Anaya suddenly had a chance to surge ahead. According to El Pais, Mutai mistakenly thought the end of the race came about 10 meters sooner than it did, and stopped running.

Then, he “looked back and saw the people telling him to keep going,” Anaya told CNA. “But since he doesn’t speak Spanish he didn’t realize it.”

So Anaya slowed, guiding Mutai to the actual finish line.

And he didn’t think much of it, either. Anaya told El Pais:

“I didn’t deserve to win it. I did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner. He created a gap that I couldn’t have closed if he hadn’t made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping, I knew I wasn’t going to pass him.”

His actions may not have won him the match, or the approval of his coach, but they did get him a few new fans.

On Facebook, more than 500 friend requests have come in since the generous act.

The meaning of humility can be expressed in several way but the humility we are talking about today refers to a godly posture of the heart.

James 4:6 God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."

1 Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God 's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

James 4:10 10 Humble yourselves before the LORD, and he will lift you up.

2 Chronicles 7:14 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Matthew 23:12 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Proverbs 11:2 2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 22:4 4 Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life.

God wishes us to be humble. Our personalities sometimes get in the way. We get angry, disappointed, upset over stuff but with the help of our God we can correct it with Gods help to the person or thing we wronged. We just have to do it for our God to help us live here in this world!
