Luke 13:31-34 “I Must continue today, tomorrow and the next day”
1. Jesus Must continue today, tomorrow and the next day despite the deception
• 31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill you
• Jesus talks about his disastrous and deadly fate to Jerusalem
• Pharisees warn Jesus to get away because Herod wants him
• Pharisees really hate Jesus are they wanted him out due to their hate for him?
2. Jesus says, “I Must continue today, tomorrow and the next day” despite the vicious attacks of the adversary
• Obviously Jesus has no fear whatsoever of his adversary
• 32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
• Jesus taunts Herod by calling him an old fox
• Jesus also makes a taut that Herod is incapable of killing him. No prophet is ever assassinated in Israel anywhere but in Jerusalem, says Jesus. In this remarkable statement, Jesus demonstrates his lack of fear of Herod as well as the reason for his long journey.
3. Jesus claims he must continue today, tomorrow and the next day no matter his fate in Jerusalem
(city of God or city of peace) His fate is as other prophets.
• 33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
• He is going to Jerusalem because he is a prophet with a message from God for the city -- and because he must be killed there, like so many other prophets before him, in order to fulfill his destiny.
4. I must walk today tomorrow and the next day despite Hostile areas Jerusalem is the city known for killing
those that are sent from God.
• 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
• In verse 34, Jesus weeps over Jerusalem, (19:41-44).
• Here Jesus so desires to save the city with the same image used in Isaiah 31:5, that of God as a bird hovering protectively over Jerusalem 5Like birds hovering overhead, the LORD Almighty will shield Jerusalem; he will shield it and deliver it, he will `pass over' it and will rescue it."
5. Jesus makes a strange statement note I must walk today, tomorrow, and the day following. "I Must Be on
My Way" (v. 33). These are the words of Jesus.
• He says that today, tomorrow and the next day, he must be on his way. What way is this?
• Perhaps it is the way of suffering, the way of compassion,
• the way of salvation, the way of justice,
• the way of forgiveness, or the way of reconciliation.
• We, too, must be on our way -- today, tomorrow and the next day.
• We must not hesitate or delay, but be faithful.
6. In conclusion , we to must continue Today, Tomorrow and The next Day
• Despite Deception
• Despite Adversaries
• Despite Our Pleasant or non-pleasant Fates
• Despite Hostile or even vulnerable situations,
• WE to must be on our way today, tomorrow and the next day remain faithful.
