Pergamum started in about 400 BC, when it was a military town for 10,000 mercenaries of Cyrus the Younger. Centuries later, it became the Roman capital of Asia Province. By the time of John, Pergamum was no longer the capital, but still the second most important Roman city in Asia Minor, behind Ephesus.
