Communion Meditation No. 3: Between Past & Present (Assurance & Hope) Series

Summary: Th celebration of the Lord’s Table causes us to think of what God has done for us in the past and allows us to move confidently into the future. This was true for the people of Israel as they traveled from Egypt to the Promised Land.

BETWEEN PAST & PRESENT (ASSURANCE & HOPE)
GENESIS 50:22-26 / 1 COR. 11:23-26
When we think of what God has done for us in the past, we can move confidently into the future. This was true for the people of Israel as they traveled from Egypt to the Promised Land.
1. CARRYING JOSEPHS’ BONES

A) In the final chapter of Genesis, we read that as Joseph was dying, he made his brothers take an oath that they would carry his bones to the land God had promised to Abraham (Gen 50:24-26).
Gen 50:22-26
The Death of Joseph
22 Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years 23 and saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees. a
24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” 25 And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”
26 So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt. (NIV)
B) More than 300 years later, Moses took the bones of Joseph as the Israelites left Egypt (Exodus 13:19).
Crossing the Sea
17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. a The Israelites went up out of Egypt armed for battle.
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”
20 After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. (NIV)
§ For the next 40 years the people carried the Ark with the tablets of the law and the coffin with the bones of Joseph.
§ The bones served as a reminder of their yesterday.
§ The ark pointed to their tomorrow, for the tablets of the law anticipated the relationship they were to have with the Lord in the Promised Land.
§ The ark and the coffin were reminders that the God who was leading them forward had been at work in their past. Assurance and hope were carried together.
2. SIMILARITIES IN CELEBRATING THE LORD’S SUPPER

§ We as God’s people today can have this same outlook when we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
§ We remember with assurance that Jesus died for us (I Cor. 11:23-25), and we look forward with confidence to His return (v.26).
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (NIV)
