Denying ourselves means looking introspectively, living with open hands, and not looking back at what we've left behind in order to fully follow Jesus and experience abundant life.

Youth Sermon: Deny Yourself

Introduction

Today, we're going to talk about going "all in" for Jesus. You know, like when you're playing a game and you give it everything you've got? That's what we're talking about, but with our relationship with Jesus. So, let's dive in!

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

Denying Ourselves

Our main verse for today is Matthew 16:24, where Jesus says, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." We're going to focus on that first part: denying ourselves. But what does that even mean?

First, let's do a quick object lesson. I want you to think of something you really, really want. Got it? Now, imagine holding it in your hand, gripping it tightly. It's hard to let go, right? But that's what Jesus is asking us to do – to let go of the things we're holding onto and give them to Him.

Living with Open Hands

So, how do we do that? First, we need to take a good, hard look at ourselves. In Psalm 139:23-24, David asks God to search his heart and show him anything that's not right. We can do the same thing – ask God to help us see what we need to let go of in our lives.

Next, we need to live with open hands. Remember that object lesson? We need to unclench our fists and be willing to give up the things we're holding onto.

In Mark 10:17-22, Jesus tells a rich man to sell everything he has and give the money to the poor. The man goes away sad because he can't let go of his possessions. We don't want to be like that guy, right?

Not Looking Back

Finally, we need to remember not to look back. In Genesis 19:26, Lot's wife looks back at her old life and turns into a pillar of salt. We don't want something like that to happen to us. Instead, let's focus on moving forward with Jesus.

Conclusion

So, what's holding you back today? What are you gripping tightly in your hand that you need to let go of? Let's take some time this week to think about how we can live "all in" for Jesus. And if you need help or someone to talk to, don't be afraid to reach out. We're all in this together.

Let's pray: "Lord, thank you for loving us and wanting the best for us. Help us to let go of the things we're holding onto and live 'All In' for you. Show us what we need to change in our lives and give us the strength to do it. In Jesus' name, Amen."
