NAZARETH- CAN ANYTHING GOOD COME FROM THERE?
Introduction:
Tonight, we are going to continue studying this town of 400 people, the Hometown of Jesus- Nazareth.
1. Jesus left Nazareth.
Jesus left Nazareth…
* To be baptized and tempted by Satan.
Jesus left Nazareth to go to the Jordan River where He was baptized by John the Baptist. Jesus went from there to the wilderness, where He was tempted by Satan for 40 days. Jesus’ ministry began. He left His routine that He had been a part of for 18 years to be baptized and then tested.
Jesus left Nazareth…
* To begin His Earthly ministry.
Jesus left Nazareth to live in Capernaum. Jesus began His preaching ministry.
Jesus began to teach them that He was the Messiah that was prophesied in this passage. He told them that a prophet is without honor in his own country. They were extremely angry with Him.
Jesus left Nazareth…
* To return to Nazareth and was rejected.
The Bible is clear that this would happen. They wanted Jesus to perform miracles like He did in other places; but
He did not because of the condition of their hearts.
2. Jesus was identified by being from Nazareth.
Just as today, many people identify others by their hometown. They do not just identify them by their hometown; but also make judgments about them based on their hometown.
Jesus was identified as…
* Being no good.
This verse shows how real the Bible is. Nathanael completely judged Jesus based upon His hometown.
Jesus was identified as…
* A demon destroyer.
These impure spirits, (demons) knew exactly who Jesus was and they feared Him. They knew that Jesus would have victory over them.
Jesus was identified as…
* A Healer.
For many who were sick or disabled, their prayer was to hear or see Jesus because they had heard about His reputation as a Healer.
Jesus was identified as…
* The Messiah.
As Jesus triumphantly entered into Jerusalem on a donkey, the people proclaimed that He was the Messiah.
Jesus was identified as…
* A trouble making fraud.
They arrested Jesus of Nazareth and they crucified Jesus of Nazareth. The Religious leaders worked very hard to prove that Jesus was a fraud; and He was just stirring up trouble.
Jesus was identified as…
* An unknown person or a prophet of God.
Peter said that he did not know Jesus. In fact, he denied Jesus 3 times. The men on the Road to Emmaus told Jesus, (who they did not recognize); that Jesus was a prophet.
Conclusion:
In the Book of Acts, Jesus is referred to as Jesus of Nazareth by Peter, Stephen, and Paul.
