#5 – Jesus

WORSHIP PLAN:

SONGS:

Last song before prayer: Something About That Name

Jesus....

The mere mention of His name can calm the storm, heal the broken, raise the dead.

At the name of Jesus, I've seen sin hardened men melted, addicts transformed.

The lights of hope put in the eyes of a hopeless child.

At the name of Jesus, hatred and bitterness turn to love and forgiveness, arguments cease.

I've heard a mother softly breathe His name at the bedside of a child delirious from fever, and watched... as that little body grew quiet, and fevered brow cooled.

I've sat the side of a dying saint. Her body wracked with pain, who in those final fleeting seconds summoned her last ounce of ebbing strength, just to whisper Earth's sweetest name.

Jesus...Jesus....

Emperors have tried to destroy it.

Philosophies have tried to stamp it out.

Tyrants have tried to wash it from the face of the Earth with the very blood of those who claimed it. Yet it still stands.

And there shall be that final day when every voice that has ever uttered a sound, every voice of Adam's race, shall raise in one mighty chorus to proclaim the name of Jesus.

For in that day, every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess, that Jesus Christ is truly Lord.

You see, it was not by mere chance that caused the angel one night, long ago to say to a virgin maiden: His name, His name shall be called Jesus....Jesus....Jesus.....

You know, there is something, something about that name........ (written by Gloria Gaither)

REPRISE: KINGS AND KINGDOMS SHALL ALL PASS AWAY…

PRAYER:

VIDEO: A MAN FELL IN A HOLE (available from www.bluefishtv.com)

That’s My King (from www.sermonspice.com)

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ

His Only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit

born of the Virgin Mary

suffered for us and was

crucified, dead and buried

He descended into hell and

On the third day He rose again

He ascended into heaven where He is

Seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

Who inspired the Holy Scriptures,

Who by grace justifies us through faith alone

And who also sanctifies us

into the likeness of Jesus Christ

I believe in the Holy Christian Church,

The means of grace,

The resurrection of the Body

And Life Everlasting

AMEN!

READING:

One Solitary life

Nearly two thousand years ago in an obscure village, a child was born of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village where He worked as a carpenter until he was thirty. Then for three years He became an itinerant preacher.

This Man never went to college or seminary. He never wrote a book. He never held a public office. He never had a family nor owned a home. He never put His foot inside a big city nor traveled even 200 miles from His birthplace. And though he never did any of the things that usually accompany greatness, throngs of people followed Him. He had no credentials but Himself.

While He was still young, the tide of public opinion turned against Him. His followers ran away. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was sentenced to death on a cross between two thieves. While He was dying, His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth--the simple coat He had worn. His body was laid in a borrowed grave provided by a compassionate friend.

But three days later this Man arose from the dead--living proof that He was, as He had claimed, the Savior whom God had sent, the Incarnate Son of God.

Nineteen centuries have come and gone and today the risen Lord Jesus Christ is the central figure of the human race. On our calendars His birth divides history in two eras. One day of every week is set aside in remembrance of Him. And our two most important holidays celebrate His birth and resurrection. On church steeples around the world His empty cross has become the symbol of victory over sin and death.

This one Man's life has furnished the theme for more songs, books, poems and paintings than any other person or event in history. Thousands of colleges, hospitals, orphanages and other institutions have been founded in honor of this One who gave His life for us.

All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the governments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned have not changed the course of history as much as this One Solitary Life.

Why study about Jesus?

 Knowing Jesus is the best thing in life.

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ… Philippians 3:8

This from a guy who had it all… influence, position, passion, and would soon have money too! This guy knew all the right people, but found the One that he’d rather know than anyone else!

 The better we know him, the more power we have for life.

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him…” 2 Peter 1:3

 What we believe about Jesus is key to our salvation.

Jesus … asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.” Matthew 16:13-17

Today, I want to teach the core doctrines about Jesus by just following the story of his life… and we’ll draw conclusions as we go along…

There is no passage that captures the WHO and WHY of the story of Jesus better than Philippians 2: I want you to keep your bible open to Philippians 2, beginning with verse 5. We’re going to follow along on the handout with some extra verses, but this is the ONE passage that ties it all together!

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11

The story of Jesus…

1. Jesus existed eternally as God the Son.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:1-3

A million-billion years before the earth was formed, Jesus already existed as part of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

2. Jesus became a man through a virgin birth.

"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:34-35

Larry King, the CNN talk show host, was once asked who he would most want to interview if he could choose anyone from all of history. He said, "Jesus Christ." The questioner said, "And what would you like to ask Him?" King replied, "I would like to ask Him if He was indeed virgin-born. The answer to that question would define history for me."

--from Just Thinking, RZIM, Winter 1998

Why was a virgin birth necessary?

 Because every person born normally is infected with the sin nature.

We talked about the nature of sin last week. Jesus, as the perfect, sinless sacrifice, could not be infected with sin.

 Because no human could carry the DNA of God.

“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form…” Colossians 2:8-9

"I and My Father are one." Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"

The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God." John 10:30-34

C. S. Lewis: "I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [Jesus Christ]: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse .... You can shut him up for fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to."

3. Jesus lived without sin & died in our place.

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-- yet was without sin.” Hebrews 4:14

4. Jesus died in our place & rose the 3rd day.

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. 1 Peter 3:18

He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'"

Luke 24:6-7

5. Jesus will come again to judge the world.

But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven." Mark 14:61-62

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

Matthew 16:27

[When] the Lord comes, He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. 1 Corinthians 4:5
