SHAPED BY DETOURS
Introduction:
From the day that 1 of David’s brothers went to get him so that he could meet Samuel (and be anointed as King); until the death of King Saul was a little over 15 years. David went from working part time for King Saul to being his armor-bearer and musician, to being a commander of the military, to being on the run from King Saul. God used everyone of these detours in David’s life to shape him.
Godly detours…
1. Happen out of obedience.
The Kingship of Israel was open, and the anointed King of Israel was ready to step in. Instead of just taking the throne, David asked God where he should go. Most people do what they want instead of asking God. Not only did David ask God where he should go; but he also obeyed and moved to Hebron.
Godly detours…
2. Have godly purposes.
David’s move to the city of Hebron in his homeland of Judah was very important politically. David was faithful to being the King of Judah.
David’s leadership in Judah…
* Formalized his break from his alliance with the Philistines.
* Helped him become friends with the people of Jabesh Gilead.
Earning their favor helped him get support from northern Israel.
* Helped him position himself as Saul’s replacement.
Conclusion:
David was anointed 3 different times. He was anointed as the King of Israel by Samuel at the family home. We see in our text that David was anointed a 2nd time. This time he was anointed as the King of Judah. We will see that David would be anointed as King a 3rd time when he became the King of Israel.
