Summary: What does the Bible say directly about the topic of homosexuality?

  Study Tools

Today we are going to talk about a topic that has been in the news for sometime and seems to be gaining momentum. A topic that in recent years has ceased to be taboo and has become rather chic. We are talking about HOMOSEXUALITY.

The church world for the most part has accepted the traditional stance, maintaining that homosexuality in any form is sinful and destructive but in recent years there has been and continues to be a movement toward viewing homosexual behavior as acceptable.

We all have friends or family members that we love and care for that lead a homosexual lifestyle therefore it is imperative for us to understand what God says about this subject.

As we begin there are some very important questions that need to be answered:

I. Does God consider homosexuality a sin?

II. Why does God disapprove of homosexual behavior?

III. Does God hate or even dislike the homosexual?

IV. How does God expect the church to treat the homosexual?

I. Does God consider homosexuality a sin?

Let’s look to the scripture,

“Do not practice homosexuality; it is a detestable sin. Leviticus 18:22 (New Living Trans.)

In Genesis 19 homosexuality was a major cause of the divine judgment against Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19:4–5, 12–13)

Someone might say, “Those are OT scriptures and we don’t live under the Law any longer.” Then let’s move over to the NT and see exactly what it says for us today.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; Romans 1:26-28

II. Why does God disapprove of homosexual behavior?

A. It breaks down the family unit.

When God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden he fulfilled his plan for the man and woman to replenish the Earth.

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’5 “and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?6 “So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 19:4-6

26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it… Genesis 1:26-28
