About Robert
  • Education: Ph.D.
  • Experience: Methodist Lay Minister Southern Baptist Deacon Christian Church Deacon Ordained Minister in the Christian Church
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: I believe that a Christian should speak where the bible speaks and be silent where the bible is silent. I believe that we cannot compromise Christian essentials, but in nonessentials we must respect the opinions of other. We need a Jesus-centric open discourse with all mankind: one that does not burden others with our traditions of observance and abstention. In everything, we need to treat each other with the love of Jesus.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: Thomas Campbell’s Declaration and Address
  • One of my favorite illustrations: A poor widow was praying for a loaf of bread when two young scoundrels overheard her through her living room window. They ran to the bakery and bought a loaf of bread and threw it threw her window. The widow began to thank God and praise Him for the bread. The boys began to taunt her with: "we did it not God." The widow replied: "God provided me with this bread even if the Devil’s little helpers delivered it."
  • Family: Wife, Son & Three Grand Children
  • What my parents think of my sermons: My mother liked them. My father did not go to church.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: My spouse is my sea anchor. She likes my sermons and very often proofs them with a special eye to my remaining humble, gentle and loving ... not natural traits for me. I used to want to preach like Paul ... now, thanks to my wife, I want to love like Jesus.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: The three keys to a sermon are: pray, pray, pray
  • Books that have had an impact: Knowing God
  • Hobbies: Fishing Writing Tinkering and fixing things
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: There is but one God: the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. There is but one way to God and that is through His Son Jesus the Christ.
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: I was preaching in a Pentecostal church and this elderly lady came in. I was a bit concerned as I watched her struggle to a pew. I was just getting good and warmed up when she jumped up and began running around the isles on the outside of the pews. She would make one round: thump, thump, thump; and then stop to catch her breath. In a few moments she would take off again. I was afraid she would have a heart attack so I stopped preaching; someone shouted: don’t stop, she is just in the spirit
  • What I want on my tombstone: I am not here!

Taking a verse out of context and using it to support our opinion can put us on thin ice with the Lord, especially when we stretch things too far.

Out of Context Introduction When we make a statement or a write about something it is very important to be sure we remain within the context of what we are referencing. It may be a true statement that we once saw a man catch a 150 pound catfish; however, if we make this statement, while writing ...read more

Church is not about entertainment, nor about being made to feel good, nor about promises that God will give you health, wealth and happiness ... it is about becoming a mature disciple for Christ.

FELLOWSHIP FOR DISCIPLESHIP ILLUSTRATION If you go on line and look up the basic needs for camping you will be amazed at what some folks think is essential for camping. They talk about bringing tables, and chairs, and portable camp fires, and solar cells for recharging batteries, and fans, and ...read more

Sometimes our zeal for evangelism and for secular service is so great that we neglect the need for service within the Christian family.

Christian Service Illustration A young child was sitting in class listening to the teacher explain a government generated lesson on what service means. The teacher carefully explained that, from a public standpoint, service is an important and useful action, which is performed to meet a specific ...read more

Whether ignorant or evil, they are working for Satan who spread the lie that all ours sins, past-present-future, have already been forgiven; thus, we do not have to worry about sinning.

Dealing With Sin Illustration It is remarkable what people will do in response to hearing what they want to hear, or in response to getting their own way. For example: there is a TV show called ‘Big Bang Theory’ and in this show there is a wimpy nerd, named Leonard, who will say and do ...read more

  • Lamb’s Book Of Life

    Contributed on Oct 12, 2016

When we take into consideration what will transpire in the judgement it certainly is not unreasonable to believe God has recorded, in heaven, the names of those who have been born again and He has also recorded what they have done as disciples.

THE LAMB’S BOOK OF LIFE ILLUSTRATION Many years ago there was a very small country church that just had a sanctuary and one small class room. For heat there was a coal stove in the basement, and there was an outhouse located along a hedgerow at the edge of the churches property. Physical ...read more
