When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, they thought out the attack very well. They allowed the talks to continue as planned. All military communications were encoded so it would take work to decipher them. They calculated how large of a force that would be needed to cripple the western fleet of the Navy. They even calculated the best time to attack so it would be unexpected. As far as preparations for an attack go they did everything right. What they forgot to calculate was the likelihood they could win the war. Many times this is how people go at lifes problems. They figure out how to get past that problem and forget that they still have to live life.
