I recently heard a radio report about a group of young men in Holland who were trying to break the world’s record for domino toppling. For many weeks they plied their skills, setting up one domino after another until there were ten’s of thousands in place. Knowing that all it would take is one small mistake for the entire set-up to topple, they made a wise choice. They built their set inside of a locked warehouse, making sure that the windows were closed. They also built into the set a fail-safe design. Every thousand dominoes they placed a small stop that would be removed later. If something should happen to begin a cascade, the stop would prevent the entire set from being knocked over.

The domino players had made the right choice. They were soon rewarded when a small sparrow somehow got into their set. The sparrow tripped a section of dominoes into falling, but the fail-safe stop prevented the entire set from falling. Making prevention their top priority ensured that their other priority, breaking the record, would be saved.
