WHAT TO GET MOM

Survey after survey tries to detemine what women really want for Mother’s Day.

According to a survey by Circuit City, less than 5% of mothers surveyed prefer candy. 30% prefer flowers, and almost that many — 27% — want a digital camera.

A survey of new moms by The First Years, which makes child development products, found that an overwhelming majority preferred a day at the spa (31%) or a housecleaning service (29%) as a gift.

But Jane Chesnutt, editor in chief of 67-year-old Woman’s Day magazine says:

"Forget all that. What they really want is some token that means they are really, really loved," she says. "Even if there are sales figures or research showing that younger mothers prefer a certain type of present over another, my strong instinct would be they would want both — the ’hard’ present and the ’soft’ present, the emotional present."
