Publicly Sing

Praises to God

A Necessity in Corporate Worship

Corporate worship services offer Christians the opportunity to publicly sing the greatness of God, proclaim His truths and better yet, as a congregation sing unto the Lord. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Ephesians 5:19 says, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

Barnes Notes tells us Ephesians 5:19 is a passage of Scripture that has the force of a command. It is a matter of obligation on Christians to have corporate singing. Jesus sets the example and the importance of singing at the Lord’s supper. (Matthew 26:30) The next order of business for corporate worship after greeting each other is communicating and proclaiming through Christian songs. Congregational singing is pleasing to God. It is a powerful ministry to equip the Body of Christ to take control of their minds and begin to meditate upon the Lord.

Steve Camp, in his written reformation to the contemporary Christian music industry wrote, “Music is a powerful tool from the Lord Jesus to His church intended for worship, praise, encouragement, edification, evangelism, teaching, admonishing and exhorting Gods people to holiness. Its chief aim is always to glorify God and worship Him.”

Corporate singing enables true worshippers to enjoy the presence of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 5:13-14 says, “The trumpets and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the Lord. …they raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: ‘He is good: His love endures forever,’ …the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God.”

The Lord works through His faithful children to lead us in the ministry of music. 1 Chronicles 25:6-7 says there are music ministers, “trained and skilled in music for the Lord.” What is your attitude and participation toward corporate song services?
