Americans are more worried about their job prospects than at any time since ‘93, raising the risk that consumer spending may slow. In February, 11% of people said jobs were plentiful, while 59% said they were not plentiful and 30% said they were hard to get, the group announced this week, the bleakest assessments since December ‘93. Just two years ago 49% viewed jobs as plentiful, while 38% said they were not plentiful and only 13% said they were hard to get. The U.S. has lost more than two million jobs since 3/01, the worst slump in the last two decades, according to the Labor Department. (NY Times 3/1/03)
