The Message translates Romans 8:31 this way: “With God on our side like this, how can we lose?”
I imagine a super-athlete when I think of this. Imagine if your favorite football team drafted a defensive tackle standing 12 feet tall and weighing 1,500 pounds. His bench press is 2,000 pounds and his squat is 4,000 pounds. He runs a 2.9 in the 40 yard dash. His bones and muscle are like steel, and those he tackles often end up with a concussion.
The opposing team snaps the ball, and suddenly three of their linemen fly into the air. The quarterback has taken only two drop steps when he is crushed. Send in the back-up. He is scared to call “hike,” and when he finally does, he meets the same demise. Now teams all across the league refuse to play this team. He is too much to oppose. No one can win while he plays. With a God like ours, neither can we.
