The author is John, son of Zebedee—the apostle and the author of the Gospel of John and Revelation. He was a fisherman, one of Jesus’ inner circle (together with James and Peter), and “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (Jn 13:23).

Behold, what manner of love The Father hath bestowed upon us, Whole volumes might be written about this without exhausting the extraordinary subject contained in them, namely, the love of God to (for) man.

The mention of faith in 1John 3:23 had reminded the Apostle John of the danger of intellectual and moral error. After the last paragraph, the mention of God’s Spirit gave him a form to clothe the discussion of truth and falsehood in its human manifestations.
