Summary: Discover joy! Why joy? Who is joy?

Sermon Study #243 – JOY FOR THE WORLD

Key Scripture: God has anointed us with oil, to set us apart from the world:

Heb 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."

3 WAYS TO DISCOVER JOY

(1) Joy in serving God:

ü Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, Rom 14:18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.

(2) Joy as you trust God:

ü Rom 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

(3) Joy in problems:

ü James 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, James 1:3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

2 REASONS FOR JOY

(1) Joy is the hope of our salvation:

ü 1 Pet 1:8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 1 Pet 1:9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

(2) Joy is the fruit of the Spirit – it is a result of living with the Holy Spirit:

ü Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23 gentleness and self-control.

1 JOY

Jesus is our complete joy:

ü Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
