Summary: Allowing the Holy Spirit to Deduct Sin, so Holiness can be added

3-1=4 (ever)

Living a life filled with the Holy Spirit is as much about getting rid of things, as it is about adding things.

A life lived by the Holy Spirit is not earned. It is a gift of grace. A gift that DOES require life long maintenance. As a part of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is more than a “magical force” It must be viewed as a relationship with God HIMSELF..

3. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Triune Godhead, that He is ever present and efficiently active in and with the Church of Christ, convincing the world of sin, regenerating those who repent and believe, sanctifying believers, and guiding into all truth as it is in Jesus.

Introduction

The writing as we know as 2 Peter in our Protestant Christian Canon is in fact not a letter. It is more of a final testament. It is the recorded final words, thoughts, and teachings of Peter who was an apostle of Jesus Christ. As an apostle of Christ Peter witnessed the many miracles, events, teachings, and other earthy encounters of the Ministry of Jesus, the Christ.

“His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature. For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For anyone who lacks these things is nearsighted and blind, and is forgetful of the cleansing of past sins. Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble. For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.”

(2 Peter 1:3–11 NRSV)

I. The Holy Spirit that was promised and did arive at pentecost.// The Holy Spirit is GOD as it part of the trinity.

Peter lived in a time which was CONSUMED by earthly influences. The time of the writing of 2 Peter would date to the time of Emporer Titus or Domitian, Following the death of Emporer NERO the Roman world was in a time of uproar and uncertainity, and there was a “anything goes” mentality.

1:3. Christ’s divine power has provided everything believers need for life and godliness. “Divine” translates ?e?´a?, which is from ?e?´? (“God”) and is used only three times in the New Testament (here and in Acts 17:29; 2 Peter 1:4). “Power” (d??a´µe??) is one of Peter’s favorite words (cf. 1 Peter 1:5; 3:22; 2 Peter 1:16; 2:11). All that believers need for spiritual vitality (life) and godly living (e??se´ße?a?, “godliness,” “piety”; cf. comments on 1:6; 3:11) is attainable through our knowledge of Him (Christ). An intimate “full knowledge” (e?p????´se??; cf. 1:2) of Christ is the source of spiritual power and growth (cf. Phil. 1:9; Col. 1:9-10; 2:2).

“His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

(2 Peter 1:3 NRSV)

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.”

(Psalm 51:10 NRSV)
