A LETTER OF CONCERN-

MALE AND FEMALE

1 Corinthians 11:1-16

Introduction:

As I preach through 1 Corinthians, there are some passages of Scripture that I would like to skip- Today is one of those passages. While there are some things that may make you uncomfortable, this is an extremely important passage of Scripture. This comes at a time when, (in the USA) there is much confusion about Gender and Marriage. The Bible clears this up for us.

1 Corinthians 11:1-2

Notice that Paul is praising them for following Church traditions that he had set out. It is important for us to understand that while we may not follow these traditions, it does teach us some very important lessons.

1 Corinthians 11:3

We need to understand the role of…

1. Christian men and women.

There are many who say that Paul was a misogynist. That is just not true. Women had not been allowed to be a real part of Judaism; so, their participation in the Church was new for them. They had many questions about their roles as married couples, men, women, and in the Church.

The Head of man is Jesus. For a marriage to work, Jesus has to be in control. This is up to the man. If the man is not there or is not the leader, things will quickly fall apart. This does not mean that the man is a slave owner- It means that his role in the family is to be led by Jesus and to lead his family.

The woman is to submit herself to her husband. Again, this doesn’t mean that she is less important- It means that this is her role. Unfortunately, (in the USA) many homes do not have 2 parents raising the children together. In 2020 nearly 19 million children, amounting to 25% of all children in the USA, were living in single-parent families. 80% of these are single mothers. The worldwide single-parent families are 7%.

Men should be the leaders in Congregations. This does not exempt women from serving in Congregations. There are times when women have to fulfill the roles in the Church because the men will not do it.

In the USA, we are told that there are 72 genders. This passage reminds us of the simple truth- There is male and female- That’s it. Some people are naming their children names that will work for a boy or girl; so that when the child is old enough to choose what gender they want to be, they can. What? That is how bought into this idea people in our Country are. Again, God created male and female.

1 Corinthians 11:4-16

We need to understand the role of…

2. Women.

I know this talks a lot about women covering their heads and having long hair; but there is more to this than just that. What matters here is that women look like women. We live in a time when people want to look androgenous- Not looking like a man or woman.

Eve was created from Adam. Eve was created to be Adam’s help mate. That is why the man is the head; but we can not forget that men are born of women. In the Lord, women are not independent of men.

We need to understand the role of…

3. Men.

Again, men are supposed to look like men. Men are to be the leaders of their family and Congregations. God created Adam 1st, and then Eve. We are all born of a woman.

Conclusion:

Instead of people trying to be someone different than who God made them; we need to fulfill God’s call on our lives. Women need to be women and men need to be men.
