A Special Light
Matt 2 (all)
The Star of David – the Star of Bethlehem
This special star, shining bright enough to catch the attention of people who were looking for something – guided people to find someone extraordinary. Jesus.
• It was a special star – V2 – ‘for we saw HIS STAR” – this star was DIFFERENT from all the rest
• It was a guiding star – this star guided them from the East – v9 - And there it was—the star they had seen at its rising. It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was.
• The Star brought Joy – v10 - When they saw the star, they were overwhelmed with joy.
1-The star was special – it was different – it wasn’t like all the other stars out there
Christians are special – we are supposed to be different – we are not supposed to be like every other person out there
Jesus says that when we become his, our candle is lit! It is an eternal light that radiates from us. This light causes us to shine, it is in contrast to those who do not have the light. The light can be seen.
Take for a moment to consider a dark sky. There is plenty of darkness out there, you look up and see only tiny specks of light – the stars – surrounded by black. We are the stars! The Bible says so in Genesis!
And in this dark world that we live in, we are the same way here – lights, showing there is LIGHT.
We have a purpose.
2-The Star was a guiding light!
Not to itself, but to someone extraordinary!
Just as the Star had a purpose of guiding these wise men to Jesus – we have a purpose – our LIGHT has a purpose – and it is the same purpose!
To guide people who are looking, to Jesus!
And to shine for all to see!
When we go back and look at what Jesus teaches here in Mat 5, we are reminded that we are the Light of the world – that we HAVE the light of Jesus – Remember we have the light because we got it from Jesus! – and we are to let that light shine!
How? By the way we live – and by doing good works – “so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven”.
See just like the star, our purpose is not just to shine bright for the sake of shining bright – but to guide people. And not just to guide people to a location –
See some think the star was guiding people to Bethlehem – Because it is called the Star of Bethlehem – but the star was not guiding people to a city – It was guiding them to Jesus!
And we are to guide people – not to a location – not to church – not to Byromville Baptist – but to JESUS!
Because Jesus is Greatest Gift!
3-The Star Brought Joy – we bring joy –
What better news that Jesus – that there is Hope, Salvation, LOVE, Purpose, FORGIVENESS, FREEDOM
