Summary: RECONCILIATION OF THE HOUSE OF DAVID

AN OPEN FOUNTAIN

OBSERVATION: ZECHARIAH (YAHWEH HAS REMEMBERED) WAS A MINOR PROPHET. HE WAS A JEWISH PRIEST WHO RETURNED FROM EXILE IN BABYLON. HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN REBUILDING THE JEWISH TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM TORN DOWN BY THE BABYLONIANS. HAGGAI WAS A CONTEMPORARY, FELLOW PROPHET. KING DARIUS WAS A PERSIAN KING DURING ZECHARIAH’S MINISTRY. THE THRUST OF HIS MESSAGE URGED THE JEWS WHO RETURNED FROM BABYLONIAN EXILE TO ESTABLISH UNWAVERING FAITH IN GOD THEIR FATHER.

INTERPRETATION: ZECHARIAH 13:1 (NKJV) IN THAT DAY A FOUNTAIN SHALL BE OPENED FOR THE HOUSE OF DAVID AND FOR THE INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM, FOR SIN AND FOR UNCLEANNESS. ZECHARIAH 13:1 (THE BOOK-PARAPHRASE) ON THAT DAY A FOUNTAIN WILL BE OPENED FOR THE DYNASTY OF DAVID AND FOR THE PEOPLE OF JERUSALEM, A FOUNTAIN TO CLEANSE THEM FROM ALL THEIR SINS AND DEFILEMENT.

POINTS TO PONDER:

THE PROBLEM OF SIN IS THE CENTRAL PROBLEM IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. GENESIS CHAPTER THREE CLEARLY IDENTIFIES THE ORIGIN OF SIN. GOD CAST ADAM AND EVEN OUT OF THE GARDEN OF EDEN BECAUSE THEY ATE FORBIDDEN FRUIT. THE GOOD NEWS IS GOD MADE A WAY FOR FALLEN MAN TO BE RECONCILED BACK TO HIM THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.

THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IDENTIFIED WATER AS A SYMBOL FOR SPIRITUAL CLEANSING. EZEKIEL 36: 25 (AMPLIFIED BIBLE) THEN WILL I SPRINKLE CLEAN WATER UPON YOU, AND YOU SHALL BE CLEAN FROM ALL YOUR UNCLEANNESS, AND FROM ALL YOUR IDOLS WILL I CLEANSE YOU.

UNFORTUNATELY, THAT CLEANSING WAS NOT PERMANENT FOR THE ISRAELITES. REPEATED CLEANSING WAS NECESSARY.

THE GOOD NEWS IS A FUTURISTIC, COMPLETE, SPIRITUAL CLEANSING. THE FOUNTAIN REFERENCED IN ZECHARIAH 13:1 SPEAKS FUTURISTICALLY TO THE WORK OF CHRIST AT CALVARY. HIS SHED BLOOD AND WATER WAS A COMPLETE CLEANSING FOR ISRAEL.

APPLICATION: ON THAT DAY OF CHRIST’S SECOND COMING, AN ABUNDANT, OPEN FOUNTAIN OF CLEANSING WILL COME TO ISRAEL. THIS IS THE FULFILLMENT TO HIS PEOPLE IN THE NEW COVENANT.
