I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.

Introduction

God had a plan for Jeremiah even before he was born. The Lord said, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5, NIV). This shows that Jeremiah was chosen by God to fulfill a specific role as a prophet.

God's Appointment for Jeremiah

Being a prophet is different from simply prophesying. While all believers are called to prophesy, not everyone is called to be a prophet with a prophetic office. A prophet speaks on behalf of God, conveying His messages and revealing His plans. They have the ability to receive supernatural revelations and discern the spirits at work.

Jeremiah was called to the prophetic office by God Himself. Initially, Jeremiah felt inadequate and too young for the task. However, God reassured him, saying, "Do not say, 'I am too young.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you" (Jeremiah 1:7, NIV). God had great plans for Jeremiah, including tearing down and building up nations and kingdoms according to His will (Jeremiah 1:10).

The prophetic office is not an easy one. Jeremiah faced opposition and persecution for speaking God's words faithfully. False prophets were rewarded while he suffered in a cistern. It is important to note that the prophetic office is not something one can claim for themselves; it is a calling from God.

The Prophetic Ministry

While not everyone is called to be a prophet, all believers are called to the prophetic ministry. This ministry involves speaking words of edification, encouragement, and consolation under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:3). By exercising this gift, believers can build up and uplift others in the Church and even reach unbelievers with messages of hope and comfort.

However, it is crucial to test and examine prophecies and the words of prophets. Not all prophecies are true or accurate, and we must hold fast to what is good and discard what is not (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21). False prophets may exploit people's desires and beliefs for personal gain, but true prophecies will come to pass as God has spoken.

We should see others as God sees them, valuing them based on His perspective. Every person is valuable in God's sight, regardless of how they may appear to us. By prophesying in the power of the Holy Spirit, we can influence lives and bring praise and glory to Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

Let us exercise the gift of prophecy with humility and discernment, always seeking to uplift, encourage, and comfort others. May our words be guided by the Holy Spirit and bring transformation to those who hear them. Amen!
