Introduction

Dynamic Duo – Illustration

Look at the screen with me and see if you can name the dynamic duos here. (I had a picture of many dynamic duos over the years batman and robin, bonnie and clyde, lighting mcqueen and mater, etc)

I believe that this is what God was creating in the first two chapters of Genesis.

Now look with me at the book of Genesis.

If you would turn in your Bibles to the book of Genesis. Genesis is very appropriately found in the first book of the Bible. The word Genesis means “beginning”. In this book we see the beginning of many things. I believe therefore the book is so important. I also believe it is the reason this book is attacked more than any other book in the Bible.

In Genesis we learn of creation. Where did it all begin. In Genesis we learn of sin and rebellion. In Genesis we learn of redemption. How God is gong to save the world. From Genesis 3:15 to the safety of an ark. In Genesis we learn of God’s long-term plan. Why the Middle East is the most controversial and attacked place in the world.

In Genesis we learn of relationship and marriage. Look with me now to Genesis 2.

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."

Helper – aid, to come along side

Genesis 2:19-20 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. (20) So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

This is an interesting statement. Was there an expectation that these animals would be a help meet. Or was God showing us the importance of connection and relationship.

Genesis 2:21-22 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. (22) Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

This is interesting that God would take a rib out of Adam to create Eve. He could have done the exact same thing to Eve as he did to Eve. But instead of creating her out of the ground he used Adam’s rib. Why? I believe that Adam needed to understand that she came from him. She was of his kind and likeness.

Genesis 2:23-25 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." (24) Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Jesus Matthew 19 & Mark 10) (25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Thought 1. The order and relationship between man and woman are clearly shown in this Scripture: woman...

• was created for man

• was created out of man

• was presented to man

But again: the point of this passage is not to declare some supposed superiority of man over woman. The point is to declare that God created a partner for man, a partner who was desperately needed in order to carry out the will of God for the earth. The partnership is between two equal persons and beings, but their functions and purposes upon earth differ.

"Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well" (1 Tim. 3:12).

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord" (Ephes. 5:22).

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it" (Ephes. 5:25).

"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation [behavior] of the wives" (1 Peter 3:1).
