Verse 6 of Psalm 23 encapsulates the essence of our Shepherd's favor, faithfulness, forgiveness, fatherhood, and eternal presence. This verse is the cornerstone of the entire Psalm, highlighting the everlasting love and kindness of our Shepherd.

Introduction

Tonight's message is titled "Goodness and Mercy," as we continue our series on "The Lord is My Shepherd." We come to verse six of the 23rd Psalm, which serves as the foundation for the entire psalm. This verse encapsulates the favor, faithfulness, forgiveness, fatherhood, and eternal nature of our Shepherd.

Surely Goodness and Mercy

1. Surely: This word expresses confidence and trust in Christ, not in ourselves. We can have confidence in Christ because we are united with Him and hold fast to our faith.

2. Goodness: God's goodness meets our needs and provides for us. We can approach Him boldly, knowing that He understands our weaknesses and offers grace and help in our times of need.

3. Mercy: God's mercy assures us of forgiveness for our faults. It is a recurring theme in the Bible, emphasizing God's compassion, grace, and enduring love for us.

Goodness and Mercy

Goodness and Mercy are attributes of God. Goodness cares for our temporal needs, while mercy cares for our spiritual well-being. Goodness leads us to repentance, while mercy offers us regeneration. These two heavenly messengers surround us like sheepdogs, guiding and protecting us.

All the Days

God's favor and presence are with us every day of our lives. Whether it's a season of joy or hardship, rest or rush, God remains with us. When we reach the end of our earthly days, we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Dwelling in the House of the Lord Forever

God's house is not a temporary dwelling but a permanent home for His people. It is a place of His presence and glory, where we will experience His love and goodness for all eternity. This heavenly home was prophesied in the Old Testament and described as a city in the book of Revelation. It is paved with pure gold, protected, provisioned, and everlasting.

Conclusion

In conclusion, verse 6 of the 23rd Psalm assures us of God's favor, faithfulness, forgiveness, fatherhood, and eternal presence. We can have confidence in Christ, knowing that His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. And when our earthly journey ends, we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, experiencing His love and glory for eternity.
