Summary: These are thoughts on Genesis Chapter Thirteen. In his work, "What does every Bible chapter say..." John Hunt gives an overview of each chapter of the Bible. It is my intention to do the same thing here.

GENESIS CHAPTER THIRTEEN OVERVIEW

Overall what is happening in this chapter is Abraham and Lot leave Egypt and separate from one another.

Thomas Coke (1801) – Genesis 13

Abram returns out of Egypt. A contention arising between the shepherds of Abram and Lot, they separate: Lot pitches his tent in the plain of Jordan; Abram continues in Canaan: God promises him an innumerable offspring.

Thomas Constable (2012) – Genesis 13

This chapter records how Abram, though threatened with major conflict with Lot because of their herdsmen's strife, magnanimously gave his nephew his choice of what land he wanted. Lot took an area that was very fertile, though inhabited by wicked people. In return God blessed Abram with a reaffirmation of His promise.

Matthew Henry (1714) – Genesis 13

In this chapter we have a further account concerning Abram.

I. In general, of his condition and behavior in the land of promise, which was now the land of his pilgrimage.

1. His removes (Genesis 13:1, Genesis 13:3-4, Genesis 13:18).

2. His riches (Genesis 13:2).

3. His devotion (Genesis 13:4, Genesis 13:18).

II. A particular account of a quarrel that happened between him and Lot.

1. The unhappy occasion of their strife (Genesis 13:5-6).

2. The parties concerned in the strife, with the aggravation of it (Genesis 13:7).

III. The making up of the quarrel, by the prudence of Abram (Genesis 13:8-9).

IV. Lot's departure from Abram to the plain of Sodom (Genesis 13:10-13).

V. God's appearance to Abram, to confirm the promise of the land of Canaan to him (Genesis 13:14, etc.).
