Highlight the importance and power of gentleness as a Christian virtue, and to encourage believers to embody and display this gentleness, as exemplified by Jesus, in their daily lives.

Introduction

Good morning, brothers and sisters. The Bible has much to say about the power of gentleness, the benefits of being gentle, and imitating Jesus' gentleness.

I'm reminded of a quote by Francis de Sales who said, "When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them, but bend them with gentleness and time."

Let us pray.

Dear Lord, we thank you for your word, which reminds us of the power and beauty of gentleness. We ask that you help us to embrace and embody gentleness in our daily lives. May we imitate the gentleness of Jesus, and through this, display your love to the world. Amen.

Let’s get started!

The Power

Gentleness, often mistaken for weakness, is in fact a powerful trait that can transform our lives and the lives of those around us. It is a fruit of the Spirit, as mentioned in Galatians 5:22, and is a characteristic that reflects the nature of God. The power of gentleness lies in its ability to diffuse tension, build relationships, and create an environment of peace and understanding.

The capacity to turn away wrath: This is stated in Proverbs 15:1. In a world where conflicts and disagreements are commonplace, a gentle response can be a powerful tool to deescalate situations. It can prevent unnecessary arguments and foster understanding between parties. This is because gentleness, in its essence, is a demonstration of strength under control. It is the ability to respond with kindness and patience, even when faced with hostility or aggression. It is choosing to react not out of anger or pride, but out of love and humility.

The power to build and strengthen relationships: In Ephesians 4:2, we are called to be completely humble and gentle, bearing with one another in love. This means that gentleness is not just about how we respond to conflict, but also about how we treat others on a daily basis. By choosing to be gentle, we show respect and consideration for others. We acknowledge their feelings and perspectives, and we create a safe space for open and honest communication. This can deepen our connections with others and foster mutual respect and understanding.

An environment of peace and understanding: When we choose to be gentle, we are choosing to create a positive atmosphere around us. We are choosing to be peacemakers, as Jesus calls us to be in Matthew 5:9. This can have a profound impact on our homes, our workplaces, and our communities. It can encourage others to also adopt a gentle spirit, creating a ripple effect of peace and harmony.

Our trust in God: The gentle person knows that they are weak and helpless on their own, but they also know that they are of great importance in the sight of God. By choosing to be gentle, we are acknowledging our dependence on God and our trust in His strength and wisdom. We are choosing to let go of our need to control or assert our own will, and instead, we are choosing to submit to God's will.

A powerful testimony of our faith: When we choose to respond with gentleness, we are reflecting the character of Jesus. We are showing the world a different way to live - a way that is marked by love, humility, and peace. This can draw others to Christ and can make a powerful impact for the Kingdom of God.

Let’s strive to cultivate a spirit of gentleness, knowing that it is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength under control.
